You search for your name, your brand, or the word you’ve wanted for years, and it’s taken. Usually by an account that hasn’t posted in a long time.
You don’t have to choose between waiting forever and settling for something forgettable. The best approach is to do both: pick a strong alternative today, and keep watching the handle you really want.
What makes a good handle
Before looking at alternatives, it helps to know what you’re optimizing for:
- Easy to say. If you told someone your handle out loud, could they type it correctly first time?
- Easy to read. Avoid characters that look alike:
landI,0andO,rnandm. - Short. Every character is one more chance for a typo in a mention.
- Consistent. Ideally the same handle works on your other platforms.
Patterns that work
Add a clear modifier
A short word before or after your name that says what you are:
@maraHQ,@maradesign,@maracooks@getmara,@trymara,@usemara(common for products)@marathelabel,@maraofficial
Pick a modifier that describes you, not just any filler. @maradesign tells people something, but @mara2026 doesn’t.
Use an underscore, once
@mara_studio reads cleanly. @_mara_ or @mara__ look like placeholders and are easy to mistype. One underscore at most, placed between two real words.
Shorten or rephrase
Your full name might be taken while an initial-plus-surname isn’t, or a nickname people already use.
Patterns to avoid
- Random numbers. They look like an automatic suggestion and are hard to remember.
- Years.
@mara2026ages badly. - Misspellings on purpose. People will type the correct spelling and find someone else.
- Anything close to a trademark you don’t own. It can get the handle taken away later.
Keep your ideal handle in play
An alternative is a starting point, not a final answer. Handles free up regularly: owners rename, deactivate, or have inactive accounts removed (see how usernames become available).
A sensible plan:
- Claim your best alternative now and start building your presence on it.
- Put your first-choice handle on a watchlist, so you find out the moment it’s released.
- When it frees up, rename. Your followers and posts come with you.
- Consider keeping the old alternative on a second account, so nobody else takes it and confuses your audience.
